Watercolor Bird Paintings 1st grade

First graders told me the important things a bird has: feet, beak, wings, head, body, tail, eyes, and feathers.  I drew on the board as they told me the parts, it was a lot of fun.
After they were sure they knew everything a bird needs they were ready to draw their own birds in an environment.

Our "I can..." statement was: "I can make Art about my world".

I think they did a wonderful job of drawing and painting their birds!

Underwater Watercolor Paintings 2nd grade

What do you think is at the bottom of the ocean?

Second graders answered this question when they drew their underwater pictures in Art class last week. Our "I can..." statement was: "I can use Art to show my ideas" and they did a great job!

Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers 4th grade

4th graders discover Vincent Van Gogh Paintings

students learned about Van Gogh by reading informational text and quizzing each other about this famous artist.

To make our sunflower project we used cut paper to create a sunflower in a daytime or nighttime sky.  Some students chose to make sunflowers in vases like the poster we have
on our bulletin board of Van Gogh's famous painting

The next step was to use oil pastels over our paper composition to create a painted look because we learned that our artist used lots of thick paint in his works.
Students really enjoyed applying the pastels quickly, letting the "paint marks" show on their project.
Our last activity will be to divide into groups and try to transfer our knowledge by looking at a piece of famous artwork and trying to decide if it was painted by Vincent Van Gogh or a different artist, based on what we have learned and experienced during this project!

Names with Patterns Second Grade Project

Second graders started Art class by learning how to write their names in bubble letters.

We used our own name as the subject of this art project and used patterns to make our letters very interesting.

Some students chose to show a theme with their patterns such as a jungle theme with animal patterns or turning their name into an ice cream sundae!
As an extension project for the second grades that came to an extra art rotation class we looked at word art on our new Early elementary art room projector. After discussing how artists used colors and shapes to make a word really "pop", 2nd graders worked in groups on a giant word and tried to make it look like it sounds!

First Grade Guitars

First Graders started the year with the challenge of designing a unique (one of a kind) guitar.  The kids did a great job of using colors and designs to make guitars that showed their own ideas.

A guitar with flames....

                               A pretty guitar...
And a guitar to match her dress!

Kinders Explore Texture

We are back to school and back to Art class! We welcome our new Art Education intern, Mrs. N.  She has stepped right in with explaining the behavior expectations and helping us with our first art projects of the year.

Kindergarten students had time to explore the ELEMENT OF ART of Texture during their first Art class. We used play dough and many tools to find out how we could change the play dough with bumps, lines and shapes.  It seemed to be relaxing and enjoyable for the Kinders to start Art class with a familiar favorite like play dough.
